William Jay Held

September 12, 1941 – March 10, 2021 (age 79)

Bill Held, known as the “Big H” to many, peacefully passed away at the age of 79 on March 10, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife Luba of 52 years and their three children, William Held Jr. and wife Lisa, Jenny Held-Miller and husband John, and Richard Held and wife Tara. Also survived by his sister Janice Oberlender and husband Fred, brother Alan Held and wife Norma, Sister-in-law Virginia Kellman, wife to late brother Aaron, brother-in-law Pete Melnyk and wife Karen and half-sister Dee Bell and husband Bud. Bill cherished his nine grandchildren, Amanda, Carly, Brianna, Kayla, Brandon, Gavin, John, Natalie, and Garrett.

Bill was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 12, 1941 and adopted by the late Richard and Miriam “Mitzi” Held. He was a graduate of City College High School and the University of Baltimore. In 1960 Bill joined the Maryland National Guard attached to the 29th Infantry Division and was honorably discharged in 1965. In his later years he become an active member with Post 1-72 of the 29th Division Association and was fortunate to travel to Normandy, France to visit the D-Day memorial at Omaha Beach. Bill also served eight-(8) years in the Baltimore County Auxiliary Police.

Bill was as an entrepreneur, sales trainer and successful businessman who owned multiple businesses and thoroughly enjoyed selling and providing sales training throughout his career. In 1989, he helped his wife Luba start a Home Care business for the elderly that continues to operate today.

Coaching was Bill’s passion. He coached at the youth level up to the division I college level at Mt. St. Marys’ University. He enjoyed coaching his children and grandchildren and was their biggest fan. He will be forever known for starting the woman’s lacrosse program at Mount De Sales Academy (MDSA) in 1978. He also coached Eight-(8) years of Varsity Basketball for MDSA. He leaves behind a legacy of 17 winning lacrosse seasons, the first inductee of the Mt De Sales Hall of Fame, and most importantly, the impact he had on the athletes he coached.

Family & friends may gather at Candle Light Funeral Home, 1835 Frederick Rd., Catonsville, MD 21228 for a public visitation on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. A Funeral Service will also take place at Candle Light Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 12:00 PM with limited capacity. A private Inurnment will take place at a later date.
