Joyce G. Spittel

Joyce Grauer Spittel passed from this world on December 12, 2020 in her home in Columbia, MD. She was born Joyce Hazel Miller, in Oswego, Michigan on December 15, 1927 to Karl and Alma Miller. Descended from immigrants who moved to Fort Detroit from Quebec in the early 1700s, Joyce grew up during the great depression in rural Michigan on farms in Mears and Ypsilanti. She joined the U.S. Navy after graduating from High School and was stationed at Norfolk, VA. Joyce met and married the late William R. Grauer while in the Navy and started a family in 1951. Together they had three sons; Bill, Dave & Larry. In 1960 the family moved to Catonsville, MD upon the recommendation of friends in Norfolk after Bill Sr. secured a job with the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. The family moved to Columbia in the early 1970s.

Joyce was an energetic and inspirational individual with a constant eye on self-improvement. An avid reader with interests in the arts, education, politics, financial investing, decorating, landscaping, gardening, animals, philosophy, gourmet cooking & fine-dining. Joyce taught financial investing and planning at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD. Fiercely independent, she made it her mission in life to convey her knowledge of financial investing to her family and anyone else that was interested.  

Beloved and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Joyce is survived by her sons and their wives, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in Joyce's memory can be made to The Baltimore Humane Society, 1601 Nicodemus Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136, 410-833-8848. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
