James Downey, Sr. Obituary

James Patrick Downey, Sr., 79, of Linthicum, MD passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2022. He passed away at University of Maryland hospital due to complications from lower back surgery. He is survived by his wife, Betty A Downey, his son James P Downey, Jr. and Daughter-in-Law, Tia J. Downey and youngest son, Steven E. Downey and daughter, Denise A. Cook and Son-in-Law, Derek A. Cook and seven grandchildren James P. Downey, III, Jasmine M. Carey and her husband Patrick Carey, Sr, Dominic A. Silfies, Sydney A. Silfies, Alexis A. Cook, Marissa R. Downey, Harrison L. Downey, and three great grandchildren, Louis William Patrick Carey, Jr., Michaela G. Carey and Mia G. Carey and many nieces and nephews.

James Patrick Downey, Sr. was born in Baltimore City, MD to Charles Edward Downey, Sr. & Alice Cornelia Downey. He grew up with siblings Charles Edward Downey, Mary Genevieve Downey, Thomas Millard Downey, Joseph Michael Downey, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Edward Downey, Sr. & Alice Cornelia Downey and siblings Charles Edward Downey, Jr., Mary Genevieve Downey, Thomas Millard Downey, Joseph Michael Downey, Sr. and Son-In-Law Dennis W. Silfies and his great grandson Brock M. Carey.

As a teen, he loved spending his time playing baseball, smoking his Pall Mall cigarettes and spending his free time with the love of his life, Betty Ann Schaefer. He attended Calvert Hall College High School. Pat’s life was defined by his love for coaching his sons' baseball and football teams (all of which we champion teams), his outstanding work ethic at Social Security Administration, his dedication to his family, children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren and his deep Catholic faith. Dad started working at the age of 18 at Social Security Administration and gave them 42 years of service. Our Father’s passion was his deep love for Thoroughbred Racing. He spent countless hours over his lifetime handicapping the racing form (known to all as the bible) and betting on the ponies.  On January 7th, 2022, Horse Racing lost its biggest fan with Dad’s passing.
