David White Wasmund

David W. Wasmund left this earth on December 11, 2019 with his beloved  wife of 32 years by his side. David was born on November 7, 1944 to Dorothy W. and Robert F. Wasmund in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Ridgewood in Queens, New York, and spent many summers attending camps in the area. After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School, David attended Lafayette College and earned a BS degree in the field of electrical engineering in June of 1966. Upon graduation, he worked at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Silver Spring, Maryland during the summer of 1966. He then began graduate electrical engineering studies as a teaching assistant at Northwestern University, but returned back to the Naval Ordnance Laboratory after a short amount of time. David transferred to the University of Maryland to take more graduate electrical engineering courses, but ultimately earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1975. He spent two semesters at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in the late 1970’s and completed a naval history curriculum for the Naval War College. Although not his initial plan, David started his career working for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Maryland where he worked for 23 years before retiring in 1995. He had originally taken the job to fill the summer before graduate school, but returned because a critical skills deferment appeared a better option than becoming a private during the Vietnam War. After a few years of designing Navy weapons, David volunteered and worked as a civilian with the Navy in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta for 9 months. For t he remainder of David’s time at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, David performed systems engineering for Navy combat systems which he thoroughly enjoyed doing on a daily basis.  David and Cheryl were married in 1987 which prompted David to relocate from Silver Spring to Catonsville, Maryland in order to be with Cheryl and her two children. It is in this small city where they worked together to create the life that they shared within the Queen Anne style house that they cherished and, over the course of many years, converted into the home of their dreams. David was an active member of the Catonsville community and thoroughly enjoyed his time as a volunteer for many different organizations. David was an active member of the Catonsville Historic Society and, for many years, helped organize the popular historic house tour. He also was a board member for the Friends of the Catonsville Library, and was the treasurer and event organizer for the Lurman Theater Company for 17 years. When David wasn’t helping around the community, he was busy spending time with his grandchildren building Lego sets, fixing broken toys per request from the children, attending various school and sporting events, and enjoying his time with each one of them.  David was loved by many and leaves behind his wife Cheryl; brothers Robert Wasmund (Lynne) and Peter Wasmund; children Miles Bianco (Krista) and Nicole Sadowski (Chester); grandchildren Emme Bianco and Avery, Alli, and Chester Sadowski; sister-in-laws Pat Bush, Barbara Perrault, and Donna Williams; nieces and nephews Kathy Spicer (Jimmy), Benjamin Williams (Heather), Joshua, Shane, and Lucy Perrault; and great niece and nephew Kadence and Logan Spicer.  David will truly be missed by many and we are blessed to have been loved by him during his time here on earth. His spirit and humor will live on within the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing and loving David.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to go to an animal rescue. Donations in David's name may be made to Maryland SPCA and/or Friskey's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary.

A memorial mass will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 at St. Mark’s Chapel in Catonsville, MD at 10:00am.
