Carleton “Carl” Watson Sterling, age 75, of Woodlawn, MD, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018. Carl was born in Newport, Vermont and grew up in Contoocook, N.H. He was a graduate of Hopkinton High School in Hopkinton, N.H. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1965 and a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago, where he met and married his beloved wife of 48 years, Judith (Olson) Sterling. Carl held teaching positions in the Political Science Departments at Rutgers University and the University of Notre Dame, and worked as an editor at the Baltimore Sun and other newspapers in the Baltimore area before retiring from the Carroll County Times in 2005. He was politically active, working for candidates from Eugene McCarthy to Barack Obama. In retirement, Carl and Judy enjoyed travelling the world, including Machu Picchu, Burma, and the North Cape of Norway. Carl is survived by Judy, and his brother William C. Sterling, Jr. (Mary) of Somers, N.Y. and St. Croix, USVI, nephews William C. Sterling, III (Stacey), Bruce B. Sterling (Elise), Douglas D. Sterling (Wendy) and Ross Olson, and niece Abigail Sterling Olsen (Harold).
