Barbara Brown Churchill Scotto Obituary

Barbara Brown Churchill Scotto, passed away on July 10, 2021. A retired advisor at the University of Maryland Criminal Justice Department, Barbara loved students and counseling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Scotto; her son, Robert Churchill; parents John and Franceline Brown and is survived by her son David Churchill (Melissa Churchill); her step-daughters, Melina Scotto Mastin (Paul Mastin), Theresa Rosette (Keith Rosette), Gia McDaniel (Tim McDaniel), stepson, Teddy Scotto; siblings, Philip Brown (Betsy Brown) and Tony Brown (Mary Martha Brown).  She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Barbara was raised in Pennsylvania and Southern California, the daughter of an academic professor and university Dean. A lover of art and photography, she studied art history at the University of Missouri – Saint Louis.  An independent and curious minded woman, she traveled the US and later the world extensively, taking pleasure in walking the ruins in Egypt and Italy and studying ancient history. In 1984 she began her career at the University of Maryland College Park where she worked as a student guidance counselor. Barbara was dedicated to her students and enjoyed the faculty friendships in criminology that extended to the State & Local Police, FBI and US legislature. Among her career highlights, she took special interest in guiding students who were in crises to succeed in life beyond the syllabus. She ensured that injured UMD athletes completed their degrees. She was fond of cheering them on in class and in Terrapin games. Her love for teaching extended through retirement, where Barbara tutored 3rd grade reading to students at the local elementary school.

Memories of family, friends, camping, parties, lighthouses, good food and song ring in our hearts when we think of Barbara. She loved to summer among the lakes in Maine, under the shade of tall pines and the cool of clear waters.  She often referred to her spot on the lake as a little slice of heaven.
