Amelia (Brown) Servary

Amelia Servary was born on October 10, 1926 in Olney, MD, with 3 sisters, to whom she was extremely close. She grew up in Brighton, Maryland and was raised in a rural farmhouse environment. The country lifestyle had a large impact on her life and her family was better off than most during the depression.

After her parents separated, her adolescent years were spent in Front Royal, Virginia with her Mom and three sisters before moving to Catonsville, Maryland to finish High School. She developed a high level of secretarial skills and was an excellent typist and shorthand taker working in various positions as a legal secretary and office manager.

Amelia met Raymond Servrary in the early 40’s and they were happily married in 1947 for almost 70 years. She has one son, David R. Servary, one grandson, Jason D. Servary, and three great grandchildren to carry on her memory as “Grand Mimi”.

Amelia led a very social life, constantly surrounded by friends and family. She and Raymond enjoyed hosting parties, especially around the holidays for their farewell to Christmas celebration to share Amelia’s constantly growing collection of Christmas decorations. She was a long time member of the Rolling Hills Womans Club and Catonsville United Methodist Church.

If you knew Amelia, she loved antiques, and collecting anything she found interesting. She typically spent her weekends at flea markets and auctions,hunting for a diamond in the rough, traveling to a specific antique store, or socializing at one of her renowned Edmondson Avenue yard sales. Amelia was always very thoughtful and often started a collection for someone else- this gave her something new to hunt for while she was out and about. Over the years she acquired a substantial collection of antiques and collectables some of which she donated to the Catonsville Historical Society.. She always thought of opening an antique store or Christmas shop but, never did and was a trader instead.

Amelia never got a drivers license, but Ray and friends took her wherever she wanted to go. Her collections were inspired by her travels. They traveled the world by train, plane, car, and ship, seeing the US, Europe, and the Caribbean. Amelia and Raymond were a perfect pair, she liked to travel and he was happy to take her anywhere she wanted to go. Traveling was a benefit of Ray and Amelia’s hard work throughout their lives.

Amelia enjoyed her friends in the neighborhood, Catonsville United Methodist Church, and later, Charlestown Retirement Community. Church became a strong community for Amelia where she and Ray attended regularly, hearing words of wisdom from Reverend Mark Waddell, and socializing with friends.

Amelia was a devout wife, loving mother, and was always ready to help someone in need no matter their relation. She will be deeply missed here, but may it bring us joy that she will be reunited with her loved ones in heaven and on earth in spirit.

Pick up 11:15 am from St Charles to Catonsville United Methodist church for Noon celebration of life.  Food will be served thereafter. Free transportation back at 2:30pm from CUM to St Charles. Wear something festive as Amelia loved Christmas.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Catonsville United Methodist Church in Amelia’s name.

On December 4, 2018, Amelia Servary (nee Brown); beloved wife of the late Raymond F. Servary Jr.; devoted father of David Servary and his wife Jerri; loving grandmother of Jason D. Servary. Also survived by three great-grandchildren and many other loving family members and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Catonsville United Methodist Church, 6 Melvin Avenue, Catonsville, MD. 21228 on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 12 Noon with a luncheon to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church. Interment private.
