It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald “Ron” Alan Schwartz, beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, academic, and friend, who passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on August 31, 1937, in Selma, California, Ronald “Ron” dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of those around him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elwyn Schwartz and Laverne Schwartz (Nee Palm), as well as his brother Gerald.

Ron Schwartz, “traveler extraordinaire,” was a fine man of many talents, known not only for his intelligence but also for his great sense of humor. Ron was a charismatic leader and a transformational external evaluator locally and abroad. Professor Schwartz founded the highly regarded Bilingual TESOL-M. A program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1979. In addition, Professor Schwartz designed successful international partnerships, which brought more fame to the established academic program. His legacy continues as one of the best graduate programs in the country. The TESOL program celebrated its 40th year of academic excellence in 2019 and continues to be in the Hall of Excellence in academia in 2026.

As a proud lecturer emeritus at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Ron inspired countless students over his distinguished career, many of whom became lifelong friends. He held an M.A in education-TESOL and an honorary Doctorate from Sookmyung Women's University, a testament to his outstanding contributions to education and academia. Ronald’s passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom.

Ron is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Milagros Madelaine Pella Schwartz. He is also survived by his loving children: Alan Schwartz Ocio (Lorraine Barrabee); Rodolfo Ocio (Noemi Ocio); Jessica Casdin (Chris Casdin); and Jennifer Schwartz. Ron was the loving step-father to Paola Castillo Pella (Steven Johnston) and Carlo Castillo Pella. Ron shared a very special bond with his beloved pet Alessio Schwartz. Ron was also a cherished grandfather to nine adoring grandchildren. Ron kept in close contact with his nieces, Brooke Schwartz Miller and Amanda Schwartz. His loss will be felt by many other caring family and friends.

Ronald Alan Schwartz will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched through his work and relationships. The family has requested donations be made to UMBC, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Meals on Wheels.
