Robert McKay White Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as Rob, and as Peeta to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026.
Born on June 9, 1956, in Washington D.C., he lived a life defined by melody, education, and unwavering kindness.
Rob was a proud graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School, Class of 1973. He pursued his passion for the arts at Lebanon Valley College, where he earned a degree in Music Education in 1977. This achievement laid the foundation for a distinguished 36-year career within the Howard County Public School System. Beginning his journey as a dedicated music teacher, he eventually rose to serve as the Director of Fine Arts at the Howard County Board of Education. Throughout his tenure, Rob was a fierce advocate for student creativity. He worked tirelessly to raise awareness regarding the developmental benefits of participation in band programs, ensuring that music remained a vital, thriving component of public education.
Beyond his role as an educator, Rob was a talented professional musician who specialized in the banjo and tuba. He took great pride in his membership with the Baltimore Colts Marching Band and the Edelweiss Band. His passion for performance extended into his personal life, where he found joy in organizing and playing gigs with fellow musicians. When not performing or teaching, Rob could be found helping with his son Tyler's theater performances, watching original Star Trek episodes, or enjoying historical documentaries. He was also an avid sports fan who faithfully cheered for the Washington Commanders, Virginia Cavaliers, and Baltimore Orioles.
Those who knew Rob would describe him as one of the kindest and most decent people they had ever met. He was a wonderful friend, colleague, and family member who led with a gentle heart.
It should also be mentioned that Rob was very proud of his Scottish heritage, which was instilled in him by his loving parents Robert McKay White and Cleta Rein White. Prouder still to be part of the MacKay Clan, whose motto is Manu Forti which means "With a Strong Hand".
Rob is survived by his devoted wife Joy; his two sons James White and Tyler McKay White; his sisters Christine McMillian and Andrea Jeffries, his predeceased brother John “Jack” Rein White, and his two grandchildren Robert Patrick McKay White and Katherine McKay White.
