Patrick Joseph Byrne passed peacefully at home on January 13, 2026. He was born on June 30, 1939, in Baltimore, to the late Joseph and Alice Byrne. He graduated in 1957 from Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Maryland. He joined the United States Army in 1958, serving with Occupational Forces in Germany as a member of the Signal Corps following World War II until his discharge in 1961.

Inspired by his father Joseph, a Baltimore City Police Lieutenant, Patrick joined the Maryland State Police and graduated in 1961 from the academy. He was initially assigned to the Waterloo Barracks, Barrack A as a uniformed Trooper.

Patrick, known to his fellow Troopers as “PJ” would become one of the original members of the State Police Intelligence Division formed in the early 1960’s. In this unit, he operated as a covert investigator of wide variety of crimes including, but not limited to motorcycle gang activity, narcotics, surveillance and homicide.

He retired as a Sergeant after 23 years of distinguished service dedicated to the State Police. Following that, he began his second career with Lockheed Martin Aerospace, retiring as the Chief of Security.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Johanna D. Byrne, his sister, Loretta Henderson (William Henderson), his sons, Sean (Jan), Michael (Laura), and Patrick (Gloria), seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to honor Patrick Joseph “PJ” Byrne to the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore or a charity of your choice.

Friends and family may gather at the Candle Light Funeral Home, Friday, January 23, 2026 from 2:00pm-6:00pm. A Catholic Memorial Service will take place at 6:00pm.
