Michael Andrew Maher, 61, of Sykesville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, surrounded by his family. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Robin (nee Beck), with whom he enjoyed over 16 years of marriage. Mike was the cherished son of Margaret Maher and the late Erney Maher, M.D. Mike was the youngest of their four children, and is survived by his two brothers, Patrick (Susan), and Kevin (Annie), and his sister, Mary Evans (David). He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews and one great-niece and two great-nephews.
Mike grew up in Catonsville, Maryland, and graduated from Mt. St. Joseph College High School. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the James Madison University and obtained his master’s degree in Social Work from the Catholic University. Thereafter, Mike began a career in social work with the State of Maryland. In 2010, Mike was appointed the director of social work at Springfield State Hospital where he worked until his recent retirement from State service.
In his free time, Mike enjoyed listening to music, especially the Rolling Stones, gardening, birdwatching, painting and was an avid reader, often juggling several books at a time. He enjoyed the outdoors with the company of Robin and their family dog, Lacey, who joined Mike on his daily walks as well as epic hikes and snow adventures.
Mike and Robin enjoyed traveling both locally and abroad. They loved experiencing different cultures, especially the cuisine (Mike was a “foodie.”). They treasured their travel adventures and family celebrations with the Maher and Beck/Callahan families.
“Uncle Mike” will be remembered by his family for his great sense of humor and his love of family, friends and all-things Baltimore (Ravens and steamed crabs).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind or Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in his memory.
Family and friends may gather at Candle Light Funeral Home, Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 11:00am-12:00pm. A memorial service will be held from 12:00pm-1:00pm.
