Mario Onofre Cabrera Illescas

Mario Onofre Cabrera IIescas, 84, passed away peacefully and comfortably on September 18, 2025, with family by his side. Born on March 12, 1941 in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Mario was the son of the late Isidro Cabrera and Argentina Ilescas Cabrera. His family also included his sister, Maria Eugenia Cabrera Solares, and his late brother Carlos Cabrera.

Mario came to the United States in his early 20s and made a wonderful life for himself. He was a graduate of Parsons College and worked as an engineer and program manager in the telecommunications industry. His work took him on interesting travels, and he enjoyed learning about history, politics, and places. In his later years, he was an avid golfer, mastered Asian cooking, and managed his own stock portfolio. He enjoyed supporting his children's endeavors and staying up to date on the events of their lives. Most importantly, he enjoyed a sense of adventure, whether it came to food, travel, or overall experiences. He truly knew how to make the most of life.

Mario was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his former wife, Nasra Sakran, and their children Jennifer Cabrera (Albert Boquet) and Stacy Newstead (Jeffrey Newstead); his former wife, Teresa Bitetti, and their children Jessica Cabrera and Samuel Cabrera; by his three granddaughters, Haley Newstead, Chloe Newstead, Evangeline Boquet; and by multiple nieces and nephews.

Mario was known for his kindness, gentle manner, and sense of humor. We hope that all who knew him celebrate his life in their own way and remember how Mario brought his social spark and good temper wherever he went. The immediate family has held a private service.
