Ruth Kathleen Zink (Kathie), age 82 of Catonsville, MD, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025. Born on May 14, 1943, she was the daughter of Theresa Druery and Joseph Holland—who both preceded her in death. Kathie lived a life full of love, devotion, and kindness. A loving and dedicated partner and wife to Brenda Hurbanis for 40+ years, she was a proud mother of two children; son Todd Alan Zink, who preceded her in death in 1987, daughter Kelley Nelson, and daughter-in-law Kelli Myers. She is also survived by her sister Angie Swann; two grandchildren, Eric Nelson, and Hayley Nelson; and three great-grandchildren, Andyn Walsh, Brayson Walsh, Teagan Walsh, and her loving nieces and nephews. Kathie’s deep love and devotion to her family were cornerstones of her life. Kathie especially enjoyed family gatherings, and you could always count on her to have themed earrings on, a smile on her face, and a baby or toddler in her lap! She also had the unique skill of finding the perfect greeting card for every occasion, for each family member.
Kathie retired from the U.S. Army in 2000 after an almost 37-year career in the Civil Service—traveling the world as a U.S. Claims Adjuster—first at Fort Holabird and later at Fort Meade. Continuing into retirement, she was known to love reading, puzzles, the Orioles and Ravens, and the companionship of her beloved dogs. Kathie loved camping, adventure activities, cross-country trips, and international travel—but the beach was always her home.
Through the earlier tragic loss of her son Todd, Kathie was a beacon of strength and love to those around her. Later in life, that strength and perseverance helped her navigate challenging physical limitations—with both poise and dignity.
May she rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her and be reunited with her loved ones in heaven. A Celebration of Life service and gathering afterwards will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Salem Lutheran Church, 905 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD. Family and friends are invited to commemorate a life well-lived and to celebrate her spirit and kindness that will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kathie’s memory to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS), or an organization of your choice that is devoted to promoting the welfare of animals and nature.
