John Paul Kingsland of Ellicott City, Maryland, was born on June 26, 1961, and passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 28, 2024. John was the youngest of four siblings and son of Harald S. Kingsland, Sr., and Margaret Paul Kingsland. John grew up in Catonsville, MD, graduated from Catonsville High School and Arundel Institute of Technology. John had an enduring fascination with machinery and had a long and successful career in IT for many years before becoming Infrastructure Operations Senior Manager Vice President at T. Rowe Price.
John was a lifelong sports fan, enjoying football, basketball, tennis, and baseball. He was a decades-long season ticket holder at Oriole Park at Camden Yards with his brother Hal and friend Jeff, and Ravens season ticket holder with his brother Bill. Aside from a brief and ill-advised stint as an L.A. Dodgers fan while living in L.A., John was a loyal and steadfast Baltimore Orioles fan that all started with attending Oriole games as a Jr Oriole with his dad. John instilled a love of baseball and rivalry with the Yankees in his young nieces and nephew in Maryland that continues to this day. He enjoyed regular annual trips to Las Vegas, especially during March Madness, to place bets on his favorite teams and spend time with close friends.
He loved music, reading, and science fiction, and was particularly fond of Star Trek. John loved the Beatles, his foundation for his passion for classic rock and roll music, attending the most recent Paul McCartney concert in Baltimore at Camden Yards. John loved to read, including works by his favorite authors J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert Heinlein and childhood favorite Sherlock Holmes. He also enjoyed playing video games with all of the Kingsland kids, who have fond memories of late nights playing Doom and Seventh Guest, and Halo tournaments during family vacations. John loved movies and was always up for an evening at a movie theater. He introduced his nieces and nephews to Monty Python and enjoyed an exchange of quotes. John always had a joke, pun, or a dry witty comment at the ready to liven up the conversation. John had an excellent sense of humor and loved good conversation over a glass of Scotch, spending many evenings making fond memories. He spent many years as a member of a recreational pool league with family and friends.
John loved his family and was a centerpiece at family events and holidays and was always ready to help, whether it was late night assembly of dollhouses for his nieces on Christmas Eve or setting up cable and internet service for his mother, John was always there. He was exceedingly proud of his namesake, John Paul, his maternal great uncle, and enjoyed telling stories of his work as a doctor and contributions to the development of the polio vaccine.
John was a devoted son, brother, and uncle, beloved by his family and a wide circle of dear friends and colleagues. He is survived by his brother, Harald (wife Beverly), sister Leita (husband John), and brother Bill Kingsland (wife Tammy). John also leaves behind seven nieces, niephew, and nephews, as well as three grandnieces. He will be deeply missed.
