George Harman Switzer

January 14, 1944 — October 16, 2025

George Harman Switzer III passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, with family at his side at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 14, 1944 to George Harman Switzer Jr and Kathryn Lelia Switzer (nee. Booker), he was the elder of two children. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in1961. Later he attended the University of Maryland where he was a brother in the Sigma Chi fraternity. He went on to work for Western Electric and obtained his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

On August 5, 1966 he met Susan Devlin on a blind date. He and Susan were married for 56 years until his beloved wife passed away in 2024. They both shared a love of Baltimore sports, and their vacations often were spent at Orioles Spring Training. He had a love for the Baltimore Colts, especially Johnny Unitas, and for him there was no football team when the Colts left town.

On October 4, 1970 Harman and Susan welcomed a son, Michael Rogan Switzer, via adoption. In 1974, Harman’s work relocated the family to Princeton Junction, New Jersey. He had a no-nonsense work ethic, and his positions included various product, project, and financial management. His international work took him to the Far East, Middle East, and Europe. While he enjoyed traveling for work, the two places he loved to be was at home with his family and on the golf course. He was an avid golfer who played every weekend he was home. In 1976 he joined a group of friends who made it a priority to meet in Pinehurst, NC every year for a golf outing. His first trip there introduced him to what would become his favorite place or home away from home, the Pine Crest Inn. This yearly tradition was filled with golf, lots of storytelling, a good pork chop dinner, and a cocktail on the porch. This tradition would continue over the next 30+ years.

In 1996, after 31 years of working for Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent, he finally retired, and he and Susan traded the cold for the low country in South Carolina on a beautiful piece of property on Callawassie Island in Okatie, SC. While living on Callawassie, Harman served on the board multiple times and helped the island navigate through difficult times to become a prosperous and vibrant community. Harman cherished his friendships and always made a point to stay connected. He had many lifelong friends and made more over the 29 years at Callawassie. He was especially grateful for those who uplifted him and supported him after Susan passed away.

Harman is survived by his son Michael Rogan Switzer, favorite daughter-in-law Renata Samson Switzer, grand dogs Kinzie and Evie, sister Katherine Eileen Burt, niece Christine Airey, cousins Francine Finlan (Michael), Luann Mitchell (Bob), Gene Switzer (Karen), Melanie along with countless nieces and nephews on both coasts.

Friends and family will gather at Candle Light Funeral Home in Catonsville, MD on November 21, 2025 from 10am-12pm with a graveside service at New Cathedral Cemetery immediately after. There will also be a Celebration of Life on December 6, 2025 at the Callawassie Clubhouse from 1pm-3pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Sigma Chi fraternity Maryland chapter and First Tee.
