Eugene Charles Cashour

Eugene “Gene” Charles Cashour was born on February 29, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Albert M. Cashour, Sr., and Catherine L. Cashour (née Stricker). He died suddenly on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Catonsville, Maryland.

For nearly 60 years, Gene was a devoted and loving spouse to Mary. They enjoyed taking walks down the street as much as exploring the world together via their travels to more than 40 countries. He was also the dedicated father to Robert, Valerie Gallagher (Kieran), and Cynthia. He took a lot of pride in being a grandfather to Lucille, delighting in hearing about her adventures and accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Albert M. Cashour, Jr., and his sister-in-law, Joan Cashour.

He passionately pursued several activities and hobbies throughout his life. He especially loved singing, including with his high school Glee Club and most recently with the St. Mark choir, where he was a parishioner for 55 years. He also enjoyed classical music, as evidenced by the abundance of classical music stations programmed on his car’s radio. This interest started with playing the clarinet in his grade school orchestra and continued through decades of being a season ticket holder to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Gene also relished running. He ran cross country and track in high school and later coached both. He finished many marathons, 10K and 5K races–often for good causes and sometimes for fun ones. Among his proudest accomplishments was completing the JFK 50-mile race (the oldest continuously held ultramarathon in the United States) nine times.

He equally loved to build things. This included constructing furniture, a very detailed and ever- expanding model railroad (a hobby he began as a child with his big brother), an addition to his family’s home, and a large playset and “fort” for his children that still stands.

Gene’s lifelong love of learning fueled his career as an educator. He taught chemistry for nearly three decades at Woodlawn High School before joining the faculty of Mt. de Sales Academy, retiring in 2013. He greatly enjoyed teaching AP Chemistry and acting as a reader (grader) for the exam, which gave him the opportunity to meet fellow chemistry teachers from across numerous states and countries. He also worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland and taught various topics, like home improvement, in night school.

He was a devout Catholic, which included attending church regularly, but also importantly putting his faith into action by supporting his community. For many years, he served on the board of Catonsville Emergency Assistance and St. Mark’s Social Justice Committee.

Gene attended Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore and then earned an academic scholarship to attend Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He next moved to Philadelphia for one year, earning his master’s degree from The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, before returning to Baltimore.

He educated, encouraged, and inspired many throughout his life. He will be remembered as someone who tried his best to cross the finish line of life with humility, good humor, and deep care for his family and friends.

While Gene loved gardening and tending to his flowers, in lieu of arrangements, donations to honor his life may be made to Catonsville Emergency Assistance or Catholic Charities of Baltimore.

Family and friends may gather at the Candle Light Funeral Home, Friday, June 26, 2026 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mark Chapel, Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00am.
