On August 2, 2016, Dorothy Lee (Forrest) Evans, at nearly 93 years old, departed this earth peacefully. She was the beloved wife of the late Raymond H. Evans; cherished aunt of Mary Ann and Matt Potter, Marge Boyer (Imperial, MO), Richard and Tecla Walton (Ellicott City, MD), Barbara and Mark Hilton(Catonsville, MD) and Kim and Kevin Haker (Finksburg, MD); adored great-aunt of Will and Jackie Boyer, Tyler and Trevor Potter, Bethany and Aaron Schuetz, Andrew and Jen Hilton, Rachel Hilton, Kyle and Kate Haker; and dear great-great-aunt of Coralyn Schuetz. She was also predeceased by her father and mother, Levi Forrest and Olivia V. Hayes, and niece and nephew, Betty Jane Studebaker and Ken Boyer. She was a caring and devoted friend to many.
Dorothy Lee was born and raised in Culpeper, Virginia where, in 1947, she traded in her first job as a medical secretary to pursue her passion in the art of photography when she founded her first photography studio on Main Street. After she joined the Evans family in 1958, she relocated to Catonsville, Maryland and continued to operate a private studio, while also photographinghundreds of weddings and events. It was in her studios that she built dark rooms and honed her skill as a black and white film developer. She joined West Baltimore United Methodist Church in 1958 and, until she was physically unable, was enthusiastically committed to her roles in; Sunday School, visitation, the mission work of the United Methodist Women, church suppers, Vacation Bible School and Busy Hands. During her years in Catonsville, she was also an active member of the Women’s Club of Catonsville and The Catonsville Soroptimist, including years spent working in the Village Thrift Shop and participating in other philanthropic efforts of these groups. Dorothy’s desire to assist those in need led her to be a relentless fundraiser for any charity organization that contacted her. She was devoted to her family and friends helping in any way she could – from simple chores to regularly assisting with the care of those who were ill.
Aside from her professional photography, she was a talented seamstress, avid letter writer and competitive duckpin bowler into her 80’s. She loved to travel to places near and far and documented her travel in writing and in photos. From her early years on, she was a skilled word game enthusiast and patiently played with opponents of all ages.
