Today, we celebrate the remarkable life of Denene Michelle Yates, who passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the age of 60. While we mourn her loss, we also honor the joy, laughter, and love she brought to so many lives.
Born on February 15, 1966, in Baltimore, Maryland, Denene lived a life dedicated to serving others. She was an advocate for those who needed it most and a hand that always reached out first. Denene was the founder of Safe House of Hope, where she provided resources for victims and survivors of human trafficking, as well as for those seeking to learn more about how they could help.
Even with all of her remarkable accomplishments, the work she was most proud of was being a mom to Beth, Daniel, David, Sasha, Rachel, and Joel. She was so incredible at being a mother that she took on that role for many-not just her own children.
Denene approached life with positivity, compassion, kindness, generosity, resilience, a sharp wit, and a wicked sense of humor. Her ability to choose happiness and to be the good she wished to see in the world left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Denene is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Charles Yates; her children, Beth Yates, Daniel Yates, David Yates, Sasha Yates, Rachel Yates, and Joel Yates; her siblings, Earl Lee Nelson IV and Stacy Wright; her mother and step father, Diane Wahlhaupter and Norman Wahlhaupter. She is also survived by many beloved friends and cherished members of her chosen family.
Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched, the lessons she shared, and the memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.
In honor of Denene, a Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Candle Light Funeral Home in Catonsville, Maryland. Family and friends are invited to come together to share stories, laughter, photographs, and memories of a life well lived. In true Denene fashion, all are welcome.
Rather than focusing on loss, we choose to remember the love Denene gave, the adventures she embraced, and the happiness she inspired and embodied. Though she is no longer with us in person, her spirit remains present in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
"A life that touches others lives on forever."
