Alan Douglas Eason of Catonsville, Maryland passed away on January 25, 2026 at the age of 77. Those carrying on his memory include his wife of 54 years, Nancy Henkel Eason; his daughters Sarah Eason and Emily Souder; his sons-in-law Nicholas Bertling and Michael Souder; grandchildren Wyatt and Lillie Souder; and countless extended family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.
Alan was born on August 8, 1948 in Norwood, Pennsylvania to Walter and Kathleen Eason. With his parents and his younger sister, Susan, Alan moved to Maryland in the early 1950s, first residing in Arbutus before settling in Catonsville, which remained his hometown for most of his life. As a child and teenager, Alan was a Cub Scout and competed on the Rollingwood Swim Team. He graduated from Catonsville High School in 1966 and from Lehigh University, where he graduated in 1970 with a degree in psychology.
Alan married Nancy in 1971. He spent several years working as a social work assistant at the Maryland Reception, Diagnostic, and Classification Center, then doing similar work at the Baltimore City Jail before pursuing a law degree from the University of Maryland F.K.C. School of Law. He worked for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maryland for over 30 years, retiring in 2010. After retirement, Alan audited classes at the University of Maryland F.K.C. School of Law, solidifying his interest in health care law. He became an engaged advocate for patients’ rights in end-of-life care, leading advance directive workshops in various settings and trainings as a certified MOLST trainer across the State of Maryland. He participated in multiple groups such as the ethics review board at Siniai Hospital. Additionally, he served as the chair of the Maryland State Advisory Council on Quality Care at the End of Life.
Alan will be remembered for his quick wit and edgy humor; his strong sense of integrity; his enthusiasm for computers and gadgets; his passion for partaking in and sharing photography, music, and art; his passion for fast cars and motorcycles; and his many coffee chats with friends. Above all, he will be remembered for his fierce love and loyalty to his family and friends.
A gathering to celebrate Alan’s life will be announced at a later date.
