Learning more about my grandmother during her service, solidifies the treasure that has always been a part of my life. It is no surprise to now understand why all her grandchildren have chosen a path of service, the arts, and science: Two educators, a nurse, a pastor, an actor/producer, a chemist, a computer scientist with a passion for understanding people. Grandma touched all of our lives with enthusiasm by provoking the pursuit of curiosity and imagination. She encouraged her great-grandchildren to remember their morals and to treat others with kindness. She gave the gift of storytelling and a while many of her tales were stories of heartache or loss, the protagonist was always a strong, independent woman.
I remember trips to art shows and museums, visiting the county fair, talking to strangers just for the fun of it, making up stories and telling a few, too. I remember trips to the dollar store and bulk candy bin at the grocery store, to pick out candy for the movies. I remember LONG walks around the lake at a park in Gaithersburg, to see the swans from both sides of the lake. I remember painting, drawing, doodling and building with a supportive encourager. I also remembered being chased a time or two around the piled high table in a cramped condo, by a disciplinarian holding a shoe or a hairbrush.... Those times were very few. I remember organizing and sorting through collections of books, music, toys, fabrics, handwritten notes, and art supplies. There were plants, and gardens and cherry tomatoes on vines. There were hours and hours of British comedies, operas, musical performances, children's shows, and movies on WETA. When the TV wasn't on, there was the radio.
Grandma taught me how to play Chopsticks and Hot Crossed Buns on the piano, and we listened to the radio then would find the notes on the piano. She sang off key ditties at random times throughout the day, and words in any conversation could spin off into a song. This, to the chagrin of my own children, is a learned habit that will carry on in me.
Most importantly, I remember grandma as the person who kept her family together. Visiting her father in Asbury, and family reunions, birthday parties and the gamut of holidays. We will miss you grandma. Love always, Kim

Dear Suzanne, You look so much like your Mom! You both are equally graceful and elegant in facial features. Whoever wrote the obituary, really did a fantastic job summarizing your Mom's life and accomplishments. She really sounds like an amazing woman, with both a fighting spirit for what she believed in and used her many talents to raise the next generation. We miss you, Suzanne. Looking forward to seeing you again at square dancing, when you are ready!
