Ernest “Ernie” Paul Bahler

July 16, 1932 – July 28, 2017

“For nothing loved is ever lost, and he was loved so much.”

Ernie Bahler, 85, of Catonsville, Maryland passed away peacefully at his home of 45 years on Friday, July 28.  A Maryland resident since 1953 Ernie was born in Baker, Oregon.

Ernie was the son of Paul W. Bahler and Ruth Pettit Bahler, both from well-established families in Baker, Oregon.  He moved with his family to several locations in the Pacific Northwest returning to Baker where he was a true cowboy before joining the Navy and serving as an Aviation Electronics Technician Airman.  His career in the service brought him to Maryland where he met Joan, his wife of over 62 years, and remained a Maryland resident until his death.

Ernie spent 39 years working with Westinghouse Defense before retiring and driving a local school bus for Woodlawn, Catonsville and Howard County public school students.  He was a devoted and focused supporter of his family.  He and Joan raised three children and helped to raise five grandchildren.  Ernie was a committed and loyal member of the Severna Parks Elks Lodge #2482 for over 36 years.  An Honorary Life Member he served as Exulted Ruler (four times), Secretary, Leading Knight, as a state trustee for Maryland, Delaware & District of Columbia, and was honored as officer of the year.  Ernie was also a member of the Upside Downers Club and American Legion Post 0109.

Ernie is survived by Joan, his wife; daughter Paula and her children Nicholas, Sarah and Katie; daughter Mary-Frances and her children Michael and Anna; son David and partner Ken; and brother and sister-in-law Frank and Audrey.

Visitations will be held at Candle Light Funeral Home on Thursday, August 3 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm.  An Elks Memorial Service will be conducted at 7:30pm Thursday.
